How to Prepare for Hardwood Floor Installation (A Homeowner's Guide)

Your hardwood install is scheduled. The contractor said something like "clear the rooms" and left. You're not sure what that actually means. Do you have to move the piano? What about the entertainment center wired to seven things? The cat?
Here's the real prep checklist. Done right, the install runs on time and you avoid surprises.
One week before
Confirm the schedule in writing. Start date, daily plan, completion date. See our installation timeline guide.
Empty closets in affected rooms. Closets get flooring too.
Remove wall art near the floor. Vibrations from sanders and nail guns can knock pictures off walls.
Disconnect electronics. Anything wired (TVs, sound systems, computers) should be unplugged and labeled.
Plan your acclimation space. Quality hardwood needs 3 to 5 days to acclimate in your home before install.
The day before
Move out furniture. If you're moving it yourself, get it out. We can include furniture moving for an additional $150 to $400.
Move what's left to the center of adjoining rooms. If you have a piano, gun safe, pool table, or large built-in that can't be moved, tell us in advance.
Pull up area rugs. They go back at the end.
Remove or relocate quarter-round molding if you want to reuse it.
Take down curtains in affected rooms. Sawdust gets on everything otherwise.
Pets and kids
Pets. Plan to keep pets out of the work areas for the entire install. Daycare or a separate part of the house with a closed door is ideal.
Kids. Active install zones aren't safe play areas. We're using nail guns, sanders, and tools the whole day.
Loose items at pet height. Dog bowls, cat toys, anything on the floor in adjoining rooms goes up before the crew arrives.
HVAC and air quality
We seal HVAC vents in the work areas to keep sawdust out of your ductwork. That means heating or cooling in those rooms is limited during the install. The rest of your home heats and cools normally.
If anyone in the house has serious dust sensitivities, mention it before we schedule.
Where to sleep and live during the project
For most installs, you stay in the house. We phase the work so you always have at least one functional bedroom and bathroom.
- Single floor install. Sleep upstairs, use the upstairs bath.
- Whole-home install. We do it in 4 phases over 10 to 14 days.
- Full home gut. Stay elsewhere if possible. 5 to 7 days for a fully empty home.
What we bring
- All tools and equipment
- Sandpaper, abrasives, vacuum systems
- Plastic sheeting for containment
- Tarps for adjoining areas
- Cleanup materials
What you should have on hand
- Coffee maker that works
- Working bathroom in the home
- A spot for crew break time (driveway, garage, or porch)
- Confirmed parking near the house for the work vehicle
After installation
Walking on the new floor. Prefinished hardwood: walk on it the same day. Site-finished: wait 24 hours for light walking, 72 hours for normal use, 7 to 14 days before rugs and heavy furniture.
Putting furniture back. Felt pads under every leg, every chair, every table. No exceptions.
First cleaning. Wait at least 2 weeks. Vacuum or sweep. Don't wet-mop a new floor for the first month.
Walking inspection. Within the first week, walk the whole floor with the lights on at different angles. Note anything you want fixed.
Common surprises (avoid them)
- Subfloor damage discovered during tear-out. Adds 1 to 2 days and $500 to $2,000. We tell you the moment we see it. See our PA install cost guide.
- Pets sneaking into work areas. Plan for this from day one.
- Underestimating the dust. Plan to do a deeper cleaning of the whole house after the install.
- Furniture-moving costs. Decide upfront whether you're moving it or paying us to do it.
